The first set of my Michael Jordan series went shockingly well. I’ll be honest, I was soooo excited at first, but then it morphed into overwhelming anxiety of not being able to make part II (or any of the remaining pieces for that matter) as well as I did the first.
Nothing murders creativity as quick as fear of messing “it” up.
It was a rough start but I am really happy with the result... I knew 1992 was a special year for Jordan not just because of going back to back championships but also for capturing so many hearts with the Dream Team at the Barcelona Olympics when USA took gold. I couldn’t figure out how to incorporate that without losing the focal point of the piece being about Jordan and the Bulls. Once I stopped trying to make the reference so obvious, I finally came up with an idea that worked for what I wanted to do... the actual Gold Medal abstractly hidden in the basketball portion of the NBA finals trophy. It’s not the whole story of 1992 but it wouldn’t be complete without remembering the Dream Team...
In the body of the trophy I wanted to shift away from the emotion of the “1991” trophy to the confidence Jordan was finding, so I went with the infamous “shrug” from the finals against the Portland Trail Blazers when he nailed several 3-pointers to open the game.
Tying it all together with Jordan holding up 2 fingers for the second championship, but also for two victories (Gold and a NBA championship) in the second year of the 90’s.
